Seed bank
Powell River residents now have their own seed bank dedicated to the preservation of indigenous flora and food varieties bred to perform best on the Sunshine Coast.
This is an important component of sustainability initiatives in any region but especially in remote communities such as ours.
We are able to grow selected flowering plants and food crops through the winter with conditions simlar to those of a few select locations along the Georgian Strait. The combined population (market segment) of those of us so blessed is so small that no major and few minor seed suppliers can afford to, or are willing to, supply the specialized seed varieties we require to exploit this blessing.
Ergo, we shall provide for ourselves.
